Crewe boss Steve Davis expressed his frustration at young winger Ryan Colclough sustaining a fractured jaw.
The 17-year-old suffered the injury in a clash with MK Dons midfielder Darren Potter in only his second senior appearance and will now miss five to six weeks.
Davis told the club's official website: "It is unfortunate for him because he was pushing himself into the squad and getting on the pitch, but these things happen in football.
"He will recover but it is the mental scars it might leave when he goes for a challenge like that again.
"I don't think it was an intentional challenge but the lad certainly led with his arm and when you do that, the likelihood is you are going to hurt someone.
"I've been thinking about giving him a pro contract early, but I have to talk to the chairman about that."
