Allen compares Clarke to Hart

7 October 2012

Gillingham boss Martin Allen compared Oxford goalkeeper Ryan Clarke's performance to that of Joe Hart's midweek heroics for Manchester City after his side were held to a goalless draw at the Kassam Stadium.

Hart was in inspirational form during City's European clash against Borussia Dortmund and Clarke produced a string of brilliant saves to deny table-topping Gills a sixth successive away win.

Allen said: "I thought their goalkeeper was absolutely Gordon Banks. He was awesome. I was clapping him myself from the sidelines. I had to check the team sheet...I thought he was Joe Hart. Some of his saves were unbelievable."

Allen was not unhappy with the draw, although Gillingham created by far the better chances.

"It was definitely a point gained," Allen said. "We played some great football in the first half, we just couldn't break them down and we came up against a unbelievable goalkeeper.

"The thing about any side of Chris Wilder's is that they play good football and they keep going. In the last 20 minutes we defended deep and defended well when they came at us.

"But every game in this league is hard. It was disappointing that we couldn't turn our chances into goals but it's another point on to our total. All the lads in the dressing room are absolutely delighted with the clean sheet and another point."

It was Oxford's first draw of the season after three wins and then six successive defeats was followed by Tuesday's victory over AFC Wimbledon.

U's boss Chris Wilder said: "It was definitely a well-earned point. It was backs against the wall for some of the time.

"Gillingham are by far the best side we've played against this season, in terms of the way they play and their attitude. For it to be a first draw of the season for us is a good one, considering the injuries we've had and the changes we've been forced into yet again."
