Ronnie revels in Rovers win

11 November 2012

Manager Ronnie Moore hailed Tranmere's "fantastic" football after they won 1-0 at Oldham to stretch their lead at the top of npower League One.

Rovers went five points clear thanks to a second-half goal from Adam McGurk, giving Moore special cause to celebrate against one of his former clubs.

Oldham fans have often criticised Moore for a supposed long-ball preference - and the man who lost his Boundary Park job six years ago revelled in his success.

"We are in a great position and I'm going to make sure I enjoy this result," said Moore. "Some of our football was fantastic, which maybe isn't what I'm best known for in a few places.

"The players knew how important this was to me personally because some people just won't let it go, so it's nice to come back here and win. Maybe I'm being facetious, but after we went in front Oldham were hoofing big, long balls into our box. We had to deal with it, which we did, and our keeper didn't have many saves to make.

"We should have been out of sight at half-time after making so many chances, but we kept going and scored a fantastic goal."

Oldham manager Paul Dickov said: "We had got ourselves on a decent little run, so it's bitterly disappointing to lose both of those games. I wanted a reaction after the performance against Bury on Tuesday night and the positive is that we played a lot better.

"I've seen a lot of Tranmere this season and they have been brushing teams aside, but we more than matched them. Maybe a draw would have been the right result, but to take nothing from two home games is a big disappointment for everyone.

"The game was won and lost on second balls inside the two boxes because Tranmere were sharper to react. They anticipated better than we did and the goal we conceded came because we switched off from a set-piece.

"We've generally improved in that area, so it's disappointing that one set-piece has cost us the game. We are a better team than we've been showing, so we'll stay positive and keep believing."
