Round 1 draw highlights

7 August 2012

We look at the pick of the ties in the first round of the Capital One Cup

The draw for the first round of the Capital One Cup has taken place and there are some mouth-watering matches to look forward to.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are the highest ranked side in the first round having been relegated from the Premier League last term, have a home tie against npower League 2 Aldershot Town - who reached the fourth round last season, where they lost 3-0 to giants Manchester United.

Prior to facing the Red Devils, the Shots overcame three sides from higher divisions in West Ham United, Rochdale and Carlisle United. Will they be at it again this time around?

The two clubs who won promotion from the Blue Square Bet Premier, Fleetwood Town and York City, are also included in the first round.

Fleetwood will host four-time winners Nottingham Forest hoping to repeat their heroics of last season's FA Cup, where they beat Yeovil Town and Wycombe Wanderers, whilst York will visit near-neighbours Doncaster Rovers.

Meanwhile, at Deepdale, Preston North End will host newly-promoted Huddersfield Town in a battle of the roses, while at the Valley there's an all-London clash between Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient.

There's also a Yorkshire derby due to take place at the KC Stadium where Hull City will host Steve Evans' Rotherham United and a Lancashire derby at Bloomfield Road between Blackpool and Morecambe.

Elsewhere, Cardiff City, who were beaten on penalties by Liverpool in last season's final, meet Northampton Town - the last team to beat the Reds in the competition.

Two sides that ended last season at either end of The Football League ladder, Birmingham City and Barnet, will meet at St Andrews. The Blues, who won the competition in 2011, were on the verge of the Premier League but lost in the Championship Play-Off semi-final, whilst Barnet avoided dropping out of League 2 on the last day of the season.

If a new manager is appointed at Birmingham before the Capital One Cup fixture, it will be the first competitive match for either team's boss with Barnet recently appointing Mark Robson as their new head coach and Chris Hughton leaving his post with the Blues, paving the way for a new leader.

The Capital One Cup first round ties are to be played week commencing 13th August 2012. However, if mutually agreed, The League will consider requests to play on Saturday 11th or Sunday 12th August 2012.
