Derby are interested in signing defender Kieron Freeman from Championship rivals Nottingham Forest.
Freeman, 20, has been placed on the transfer list after expressing his desire to leave the City Ground.
Clough told BBC East Midlands Today: "He's a young player and we like that sort of profile. But he's only really had experience at League One.
"We have to fill positions in the squad and he's maybe another for the future."
Freeman has not made a first-team appearance for Forest but had loan spells at Mansfield and Notts County last season.
Meanwhile, Derby have taken Livingston's teenage striker Marc McNulty on trial.
McNulty was on the scoresheet and impressed as a young Rams XI beat Evo-Stik Northern Premier League side Matlock Town 2-1 in a friendly on Wednesday night.
The 19-year-old has scored 18 goals in 50 appearances for Scottish First Division club Livingston, including a hat-trick in an 8-0 victory at Stranraer in the Scottish League Cup earlier this month.
