Cobblers catch Artell

13 August 2012

Northampton have signed defender David Artell on a two-year contract.

Former Crewe captain Artell recently joined Port Vale after leaving the Alex at the end of last season following their promotion from npower League Two via the play-offs.

However, with Vale still in administration, the club has been re-issuing contracts to all of its existing players and over the weekend Artell refused to sign the new terms agreed with the administrators, the PFA and Football League.

"In David we are talking about the man who lifted the play-off trophy at Wembley a couple of months ago," said Northampton boss Aidy Boothroyd. "He had the chance to move to a club on his doorstep in Port Vale and he took it. Things didn't work out there but we tried to bring David in earlier this summer, it didn't happen then but now we have got a lucky break."

"I sold the club to David and fortunately he has brought in to what we are trying to do. He is a senior figure, a leader, he has been promoted three times, he is great in the dressing room, he is a voice on the pitch, he knows this level inside-out and I think he is the voice who will connect us together and give the whole club a lift.

"He will help the defenders around him, he will help those in front of him and I know that when we line up in the tunnel we will have a good physical size about us, but we will have some good footballers in the side as well."
