Fulham ran out 3-1 winners at Newcastle United to close the gap between themselves and the Sky Bet Championship’s top six on Matchday 37.

Tom Cairney and a Ryan Sessegnon brace handed the Cottagers three points, and they are now just two points outside of the Play-Off places after Sheffield Wednesday lost 2-0 at Aston Villa.

Defeat for the Magpies means they are level on points at the top of the division following Brighton's 3-0 win against Derby County on Friday night, and Huddersfield Town kept the pressure on after Rajiv Van La Parra’s goal secured a 1-0 success at Brentford.

At the opposite end of the table, a late goal from Aden Flint earned Bristol City maximum points from their trip to fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic, while Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burton Albion also picked up vital 1-0 wins in their bids for survival.

Blackburn Rovers extended their unbeaten run to five games under Tony Mowbray, but they were denied three points late on against Norwich City, drawing 2-2 and dropping into the bottom three as a result.

Preston North End put three past Reading without reply, while Leeds United and Queens Park Rangers played out a goalless draw at Elland Road.

Elsewhere, Ipswich Town and Birmingham City both scored late goals to earn a point, drawing with Barnsley and Cardiff City respectively.

Fleetwood Town’s 18-match unbeaten run was ended by promotion rivals Bolton Wanderers, who ran out 4-2 winners at Highbury.

Adam Le Fondre bagged a brace for the Trotters as they reduced the gap between themselves and the Cod Army to a point.

Bradford City kept up the pressure after condemning rock-bottom Coventry City to another defeat, while Scunthorpe United lost more ground after surrendering a two-goal lead against Gillingham. Josh Wright converted three penalties in nine minutes to hand the Gills the points.

Bristol Rovers moved level with Southend United in the race for the Play-Offs after defeating the Shrimpers 2-0, while a win for Oxford United keeps them in contention, too.

At the other end, JJ Hooper scored twice to help Port Vale to a vital 3-2 win over Swindon Town. The Valiants remain in the relegation zone, but made ground on the teams above them courtesy of a goalless draw between Oldham Athletic and Bury.

Chesterfield and Shrewsbury Town drew 1-1 in another battle towards the bottom of the division, and that was also the score between Charlton Athletic and Walsall.

Elsewhere, Milton Keynes rescued a point late on to draw 2-2 with Rochdale, and Northampton Town made it 12 matches against AFC Wimbledon without defeat — Matty Taylor’s penalty earning the Cobblers a 1-0 win on the road.

Stevenage made it 25 points from a possible 27 after defeating fellow promotion-chasers Luton Town by two goals to nil.

Goals from Luke Wilkinson and Ben Kennedy helped them move above the Hatters and into fourth place in the Sky Bet League Two table.

Carlisle United were another side to be overtaken Boro, after they were undone by a Medy Elito second-half hat-trick for Cambridge United.

Those results meant it was a good afternoon for the division’s top three, Doncaster Rovers, Plymouth Argyle and Portsmouth.

The leading pair both picked up routine 2-0 wins against Cheltenham Town and Mansfield Town respectively, while Pompey racked up a fine 4-0 success at Colchester United.

At the other end, Newport County began life after Graham Westley with a 2-1 comeback win at Crewe Alexandra, although they remain nine points adrift of safety.
